A camera does not simply decide whether a photograph is light or dark. It balances three settings, and each one leaves its own visual fingerprint on the finished image.
Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are often called the exposure triangle. Together they control how the camera records light. Change one corner of the triangle and you may need to adjust another—but brightness is only part of the story.
A wider aperture can soften the background. A faster shutter speed can freeze motion. A higher ISO can make a photograph possible in low light while introducing visible noise. Learning exposure becomes much easier once you can see those tradeoffs instead of memorizing numbers.

Move the controls and watch the photograph respond. The meter shows the combined exposure relative to the starting settings.
Controls light and depth of field. Smaller f-number, softer background.
Controls light and motion. Slower speeds introduce movement or camera shake.
Controls signal amplification. Higher ISO brightens the image but reveals more noise.
This educational simulation uses a sharp-base poolside photograph and a defined focus plane around the lounge chairs. The background progressively sharpens as the aperture closes and softens as it opens. Exposure and noise are modeled directly; depth of field and motion remain approximations of an in-camera result.
What does each camera setting do?
All three settings influence exposure, but their creative effects are different. That is why there is rarely one “correct” combination. The useful question is: what does this photograph need?
Aperture
Changes the size of the lens opening. A wide aperture such as f/1.8 admits more light and creates shallower depth of field. A narrow aperture such as f/11 admits less light and keeps more of the scene acceptably sharp.
Shutter speed
Controls how long light reaches the sensor. Fast shutter speeds freeze action. Slow shutter speeds allow motion blur, intentional light trails, or camera shake unless the camera is stabilized.
ISO
Controls how strongly the camera amplifies the captured signal. Low ISO usually preserves cleaner detail. High ISO helps in dim conditions but can reduce color accuracy and introduce luminance or color noise.
Aperture: light and depth of field
Aperture is written as an f-number. The numbering feels backward at first: f/2 is wider than f/8. A wider opening lets in more light and can isolate a subject against a soft background. A narrower opening lets in less light while increasing the range that appears sharp.

In this flower photograph, the near blossoms are clearly separated from the pool and trees. That separation directs attention. For a portrait, the same idea can keep a face sharp while allowing a busy environment to fall away. For a landscape or architectural photograph, I may choose a narrower aperture because the setting itself is part of the subject.
Shutter speed: motion and time
Shutter speed describes how long the sensor gathers light. At 1/1000 second, a running subject can appear frozen. At 1/15 second, a moving person may blur, and even a still subject can look soft if the camera moves during the exposure.
Blur is not automatically a mistake. A slower shutter can make water feel silky, show the energy of a dance floor, or turn traffic into ribbons of light. The creative decision is whether motion should be stopped, suggested, or allowed to become the subject.
ISO: sensitivity, noise, and the moment
ISO does not bring more light through the lens. It amplifies the signal the camera has already captured. Raising ISO therefore makes the recorded image brighter, but it can also make noise and imperfections more visible.
I generally use the lowest ISO that still lets me choose the aperture and shutter speed the moment requires. That last part matters. A slightly noisy photograph of a real expression is usually more valuable than a perfectly clean photograph blurred by an unusably slow shutter speed.
Equivalent exposures: same brightness, different photograph
A “stop” is a doubling or halving of light. If you close the aperture by one stop, you can recover the lost brightness by slowing the shutter one stop or raising ISO one stop. The meter returns to the same place, but the photograph changes.
For the same scene, f/2.8 · 1/500 · ISO 100, f/4 · 1/250 · ISO 100, and f/5.6 · 1/125 · ISO 100 are equivalent exposures. Each combination records roughly the same brightness, but the narrower aperture adds depth while the slower shutter gives movement more opportunity to blur.

How I choose settings in the real world
I begin with the consequence that matters most. If a child is moving quickly, shutter speed comes first. If I want a quiet portrait with a soft background, aperture leads. If the light is limited and the moment will not repeat, ISO gives me room to protect both.
That approach is more useful than chasing technically perfect settings. Camera controls are storytelling controls. The exposure triangle becomes intuitive when each decision starts with what you want the viewer to feel and notice.
Exposure decisions when the moment will not repeat
At a wedding, exposure decisions rarely happen in isolation. A recessional combines movement, changing distance, and no opportunity for a second take. During quiet portraits, aperture may take priority because subject separation is part of the image. At a dark reception, I would rather protect a usable shutter speed and accept a noisier file than lose an expression to motion blur.
The meter can be centered and the photograph can still fail. The useful exposure is the one that protects what matters in that particular frame. That may mean holding enough shutter speed for a sudden reaction, keeping both people inside the depth of field during a ceremony, or recognizing that the lead photographer needs a complementary angle rather than a duplicate one.
That is why I think of the exposure triangle less as three settings to balance and more as three variables competing for priority. The scene decides which compromise matters least. My job is to make that decision before the moment is gone.

Common exposure triangle mistakes
Watching the meter but ignoring motion
A balanced meter does not guarantee a sharp photograph. At slow shutter speeds, camera shake and subject movement can still ruin an otherwise accurate exposure.
Using a wide aperture without checking focus
Very shallow depth of field gives little room for error. In a close portrait, one eye may be sharp while the other is already soft.
Avoiding high ISO at all costs
Modern cameras can produce useful files at surprisingly high ISO values. Noise can often be managed; missed focus and motion blur are much harder to repair.
Changing all three settings without a priority
Decide what matters first. That makes the other settings constraints instead of guesses.
